Declaração de 100 profissionais cientistas, médicos e de saúde mental americanos sobre o efeito do aborto nas mulheres

A Suprema Corte dos Estados Unidos declarou (in Gonzales v. Carhart) que "é indiscutível que algumas mulheres venham a arrepender-se de sua escolha em abortar a vida de uma criança que elas próprias geraram e sustentaram... depressões graves e perda da auto-estima podem ocorrer"

Abortar é uma difícil e complexa decisão, por causar um profundo impacto na mulher, em sua saúde mental e bem-estar, na sua relação com a criança no útero, no seu relacionamento com o marido e/ou parceiro sexual, com outros membros da família, bem como com a sociedade em geral.
Como cientista, profissional médico ou de saúde mental, concordo, com as seguintes conclusões sobre o aborto:

OS FATOS

1) É comum que as mulheres experimentem sentimentos de raiva, medo, tristeza, ansiedade, sofrimento ou remorso depois de abortarem. A Suprema Corte dos Estados Unidos está correta em afirmar que "é indiscutível que algumas mulheres venham a arrepender-se de sua escolha em abortar a vida de uma criança que elas próprias geraram e sustentaram... depressões graves e perda da auto-estima podem ocorrer." [1]

2) A reação das mulheres face a tais sentimentos varia consideravelmente, de acordo com suas habilidades emocionais e pré-existentes de lidar com o fato e poder conviver com ele. É inegável que há um significativo número de mulheres que sofrem danos devido ao aborto, e que não deveriam ser ignoradas pela classe médica, como igualmente significativo é o número de mulheres que passam a sofrer graves problemas físicos, mentais, ou traumas psicológicos em decorrência do aborto.

3) A conclusão de que existe uma conexão de causa e efeito entre aborto e problemas negativos é sustentada por três linhas independentes de evidências: (a) a auto-percepção das próprias mulheres, (b) profissionais de saúde mental que diagnosticaram com sucesso e trataram das reações pós-aborto, e (c) estudos, estatisticamente comprovados, que avaliam um grande número de fatores, e que têm sido publicados em revistas especializadas.

4) Há um significativo conjunto de pesquisa que demonstra que o aborto traz conseqüências danosas para as mulheres. Há evidências científicas definitivas que sustentam esta afirmação.  As mais importantes evidências científicas, até agora, sugerem que um grande número de mulheres que decidem abortar sofre de sérios e persistentes sintomas de ansiedade, depressão, trauma, comportamento suicida, desordens do sono e distúrbios no abuso de substâncias. Tais evidências não devem ser escondidas por nenhuma razão, e deveriam ser informadas às mulheres como parte do processo antes do consentimento ao aborto. Pesquisas científicas sérias têm demonstrado que o aborto está estatisticamente associado a diversos problemas de saúde mental, em comparação a mulheres que não abortaram.
